Batik is a process of fabric dyeing that uses wax to resist the activity of dye. I dye and wax in many steps. The wax is applied when melted, but cools and can crack, allowing dye to seep into the cracks. Because the wax obscures the fabric, the final appearance of the piece after wax removal is often surprising. That's the fun part!
All of my batiks come from a smoke free home with Cat Patrol.

sue cracks up Sue Cracks Up batik quilt
Sue Cracks Up was my quilting entry for California State Fair 2006 where she won a blue, as well as Pacific International Quilt Festival. After hanging in two shows and winning a prize, she has been in the closet. She's ready to come out now and grace your wall. 29"x30" not counting the prairie points, she has a sleeve for hanging.
Each panel or block in Sue Cracks Up was batiked individually using traditional hot wax on good ol' 100% cotton. The sashing "in between" the blocks is actually included on the same piece of the Sue or sunflower. They are stitched together by machine and machine quilted with cotton batting and cotton back. $465.00, shipping $10.00.

cups and fans batik Cups and Fans
This is a softly colorful picture of four different coffee cups with a row of Grandmother's Fans across the top. The fans are inspired by the traditional quilt block Grandmother's Fan. The outside edge is not accidental dye overspill, but a deliberate application of dyes at different steps of the process. Hot water has been used to remove the wax, so there is less wax than in ironed pieces. The entire piece is shown in the close up photo and measures 17x19 inches. The edges are unfinished. $120.00, $6.25 shipping.

small house Small House "24x"25 framed
It's the size of house you could live in if the neighbors were far from view and the weather was so nice you were outside most of the time. This piece is immersion dyed: between each wax application the whole piece was immersed in dye, so every part not covered with wax receives the dye. Blue was the first color, then yellow dye changed the exposed blue to green. Red turned the green to brown. Most of the wax has been removed by ironing. It is matted with burlap and pieces of vintage-looking (but new)cotton fabric using big stitches of cotton embroidery floss. $230.00, shipping to US $60.00 shipping.

dogteeth house Dogteeth House framed with archival glass, but not wanting to have a good photo. click onthe picture to see better detail but no frame.
The name of this house comes from the border, which is a batik rendition of the traditional block element that quilters use. When half-square triangles are put in a row, we call them Dog Teeth. They are often one of the first thing quilters learn to make. That's what you see on the right hand side of the house. These patters are not pieced in different fabrics, but dyed into a single piece of fabric. The batiked fabric is cotton, mounted on cotton ticking, matted with cotton prints and cotton floss. $230.00, shipping to US $60.00. Click on the picture to see it enlarged.
