doublecat main page Batik Art quilts for people and horses artful clothing gifts, both usual and unusual horse stuff all about me, in brief

I like to make quilts all year round, not like batik, which I do outdoors when the weather is good.

Each is One-Of-A-Kind, pieced by machine with high quality cotton fabric. They are machine quilted using a domestic machine. No computer program here! The quilting patterns are my own designs, sometimes based on tradition, but often not. My friends say I should purchase a long arm quilting machine, but I resist. They take up the whole room, I would have to specialize!

All of my quilts come from a smoke free home with Cat Patrol.

june4patch June Fourpatch
This quilt was inspired by a shirt quilt that was presented in a Piecemakers Quilt Guild Show and Tell. When I was selecting the fabric, I wanted the fabric with tiny rosebuds, and that "wanted" red/green complement colors. Can you use red and green without looking like Christmas? And, oh yeah, I also made the rule that my quilt must have at least one stripe or plaid like the shirt quilt that inspired it! I named it after June because, as my little boy knows well, June is as far from Christmas as you can get!

100% cotton fabric, cotton poly batting(warmer that pure cotton,) machine quilted in rayon thread on top, cotton thread on the back. The quilting is a pattern of traditional feathers with spirals and lazy channels. The back fabric is white and the quilting thread is yellow for a subtle and luxurious look. It is 101"x86" (256x218cm) and has a sleeve for hanging. Machine wash, tumble dry, no bleach. It comes in a new pillow case. $639.00

sue cracks up Sue Cracks Up
Sue Cracks Up was my quilting entry for California State Fair 2006, as well as Pacific International Quilt Festival. After hanging in two shows and winning a blue, she has been in the closet. She's ready to come out now. 29"x30"(74x76cm) not counting the prairie points, she has a sleeve for hanging.
Each panel or block in Sue Cracks Up was batiked individually using traditional hot wax on good ol' 100% cotton. The sashing "in between" the blocks is actually included on the same piece of the Sue or sunflower. They are stitched together by machine and machine quilted with cotton batting and cotton back. $465.00,
$13.90 insured shipping.

uncertainty of measurement Uncertainty of Measurement
This little quilt makes order out of the choas of my 'smallest' scrap basket. I looked at Julia sets and Mandelbrot equations to design the quilting, so I say it is inspired by Julia Mandelbrot. As far as I know, there's nobody by that exact name. Students of physics and chaos theory will understand. I, myself, am not a student of physics, merely the daughter of one and the wife of another.

All the fabrics and batting are 100% cotton. The quilting top thread is rayon. It's 37"x34.5" (94x86cm), and has a sleeve for hanging. It comes in a new fabric pillow case. (and, yes, it really is flat!) $144.00

Coniferous Child Coniferous Child
"....enter child with an ice cream cone.
The parent is easily beguiled
by site of this coniferous child."

   Tableau at Twilight, Ogden Nash

This quilt was accepted into Pacific International Quilt Festival, 2005.
It reminds me of ice cream cones. I saw a picture of a quilt made by Virginia America Stover around the turn of the century. I couldn't find out anything about her except that she had made the quilt. In spite of that, or because of that, I wanted to make a carpenter's wheel quilt. If she knew her quilt would inspire another quilter 100 years later, what would she have thought?

Even though inspired by an old quilt, my quilt was made in 2005 and I felt free to use modern materials and methods. 30s reproduction fabrics give it that "Grandma's Quilt" look, though they are more modern than Virginia's quilt. 'Blendable' cotton thread machine quilting on the top and back in feathers and peacock meander that finishes it well, and makes the back a work of art on its own. Quilt shop quality cotton fabrics with cotton batting, 94"x87" (239x221cm)with a sleeve for hanging. Machine wash, tumble dry, it comes new pillow case. $900.00,
$28.30 insured shipping.

My current favorite, this one was juried into Pacific International Quilt Festival 2006, where many quilters studied it close up and from farther back. It's a big one. Queen size even. It was a lot of fun to make, and It took a while to be ready to sell it. Each of the darker squares is pieced, and many of the lighter ones are also. Click on the picture to see a close up. These squares are two inches, one and a half inches when sewn into the quilt. It's a 4-patch block, but I used a bit differently. Some very experienced quilters have taken a little while to figure it out.

Measuring 83"x105", or 7 feet 1 inch by 8 feet 9 inches,(211cm x 266cm) it's big enough for a pillow tuck!

The quilting topstitching pattern is non-traditonal and was inspired by skeleton keys: there are 5 keys hidden in the quilting thread.

The quilting is in many different colors of glossy rayon thread, not only on the top, but in the back. I used white cotton for the backing so the quilting pattern is very striking. It's densely quilted for long wear and to be interesting to look at if you are in bed underneath it. All my quilting patterns are unique, I never buy pantographs. It comes in it's own new pillowcase. $900.00,

Merry-Go-Round Horse Wall Hangings
The merry-go-round has always been my favorite ride. When I was small, it was as close as I could get to the real thing. Now, in my grown-up life, I appreciate these horses because they will never spook or buck you off. In stable-speak, they are "bomb proof." These quilts are made to hang on the wall. They are small so they are good for small spaces, and can be hung anywhere you want fun horses. They are machine piced of cotton fabric, with poly batting and cotton back, machine quilted with rayon thread in a traditional feather pattern. I quilted them freehand, without sketching the design out first, totally OOAK. They have four inch sleeves on the back. Each one is $15.00, $4.60 shipping
